Updating usdudes.com
Okay. There seems to be something seriously up with the UsDudes site. The permanent links to the posts don’t seem to be working. Anyway, I think it’s about time I overhaul the site anyway.
A list of things which need to be done:
- Still need to update it to the latest version of wordpress which I have not done yet. This will implement some security fixes and also the convenience of ‘Save and Continue Editing’ Pages.
- I’m thinking of just getting rid of the gravatars altogether. Or try to implement them into the site in a more unobstrusive manner.
- Make proper and cleaner permanent links like what I have done with my own blog. i.e. without the ‘/index.php/’ being there all the time. It will make the site look more structured. Which means I’ll need to implement .htaccess on the site.
- The current skin/theme for the site is based off the popular/default kubrick theme. But the code is actually quite messy with all the image placements and stuff. I’m thinking of switching to the theme my blog is using which is Connections Reloaded. It is easy to modify and the code is much much cleaner. I think it will work well on the usdudes site. Just need to edit the banner images and other stuff like spacers and backgrounds.
- One thing that is really wrong with the site it that it seems just too much like a blog. Which it isn’t. I know we haven’t really been adding much features lately but those are what are supposed to be the main content of the site. And I feel they’re being neglected even though there is a features link on the right. Like any blog, people might assume it’s a blog category or something. So what I want to do is make a splash page for the site which has bits of everything. The banner will be at the top of course with the usual main links. Then below that maybe will have the three latest feature posters (linked of course) and a link to the rest of the features. Then below that maybe the latest five blog entries and a link to the rest of the blog. I think that would work very well.
