Happy Independence Day!
Okay, some of you might be looking at the title of this post and thinking, “Huh?”. So I’ll explain it to you. Today, 26th July, is the Maldives’ Independence Day. And oddly enough, it is celebrating it’s 40th year of independence, like Singapore. And you know what’s the best part about today? No work!!! Wahahaha.. So I have the day off today and guess what I did?
That’s right, watched more anime. This time I rewatched Witch Hunter Robin. It’s about this secret organization called STNJ which is in charge of, you guess it, hunting down witches. In the anime, the term ‘witch’ is not gender specific so it refers to all humans, man, woman or child that possesses an innate ability or power such as ESP, telekinesis, the ability to control electricity, etc. Anyway, Robin Sena is a witch hunter as well who is sent by STNJ’s headquarters (also known as Solomon) as a replacement for another hunter who had dissappeared. She’s only 15 years old but she is a much more powerful type of hunter known as a ‘craft user’. Her ability is basically pyrokinesis, i.e. she can create and control fire.
The first half of the series uses the ‘monster-of-the-week’ format and not much goes as far as the story is concerned. There is some characterization and you learn about the relationships (not romantic) between the members of STNJ. But the second half of the anime gets really interesting with twists and turns and people not being who they seem, etc etc. I would say the genre of the series is something like a serious crime drama with science fiction mixed in. Sorta X-Files-ish in a way actually.
I’ll post up some of my favourite screen captures soon. Oh, and the opening theme song is really good: Shell by Bana.
Action shots (there aren’t really that many because most of the time, the way the witches and Robin use their power is to just stand around and basically stare at each other while their powers to the rest…):
