Garden State Pseudo-review
So I finally managed to watch Garden State starring Zach Braff of ‘Scrubs’ fame. I’m not a really great reviewer so bear with me. So anyway, I shall just give you my thoughts about the movie:
I loved it. It was a really good movie. It’s not particularly fast paced or anything, but nor is it slow and boring. The pacing is quite good though it did seem to go quicker towards the end. Maybe coz I just didn’t want it to end so fast coz I loved it so much. The characters are quirky and engaging. Zach Braff is definitely more mellow in this role as opposed to his role as J.D. in Scrubs. Still entertaining to watch. Natalie Portman is looking as pretty as ever and has great chemistry with Zach. She’s one of the more quirky characters in the show and kinda reminds me of Kate Winslet’s character in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind minus the extreme hair dyeing.
The story was very well written (by my standards, which aren’t very high anyway). To summarise I suppose, it’s just about this guy Andrew (played by Zach), an aspiring actor who’s living in Los Angeles with one major movie role to date and currently working at a Vietnamese restaurant to get by. He receives a call from his dad one night telling him his mum died. So he returns home after 9 years to New Jersey. He meets old friends and a new one in the form of Sam (played by Natalie). Sam is an enigma of sorts when she first meets Andrew. But she’s immediately likable. They spend quite a bit of time together during his short stay and Andrew falls in love with Sam, who helps him to awaken from a lithium induced mental coma in which he’s spent much of his life.
So overall, I suppose it’s one of those journey of self discovery type stories with a love story of sorts thrown in. But it’s beautifully directed by Zach Braff. 2 thumbs up. A must watch. It never had a theatrical release here in Singapore but I think it’s available for rent on dvd at most large video stores. Try to get your hands on it anyway. If for nothing but to see Natalie Portman soaked and in her underwear. Rowr!
